Additional facts:

- She's a New York Class battleship.
- She's the first US battleship to have anti-aircraft armaments mounted on her.
- She's the first US battleship to launch an aircraft from a platform.
- She's the first US battleship to show movies with sound on board for crew entertainment.
- She tested the first shipborne radar designed and made by a commercial company.
- She participated in Operation Torch, when allied troops landed in North Africa.
- She participated in Operation Overlord and was the Bombardment Force Flagship for Omaha Beach, during which she provided fire support for allied troops.
- She participated in the Battle of Cherbourg. During which, she was ordered with the Battleship Arkansas to move 6 miles east to attack German gun battery Hamburg. In the artillery duel between the gun emplacements and the two battleships, the Texas recieved minor damage and 11 casualties, only one of which succumbed to his wounds.
- She participated in Operation Dragoon.
- She participated in the fight for the island of Iwo Jima, pounding Japanese positions on the island for three days before troops hit the beaches. Afterwards, she provided firesupport as they pushed into the island.
- She participated in the fight for the island of Okinawa, pounding the Japanese positions there for six full days straight before the landing of US troops. For nearly two months, she remained off the shores of Okinawa providing firesupport for the soldiers.
- On the 18th of June, 1945, she was placed on reserve in Baltimore. However, a commission in Texas raised the funds to pay for her to be towed from Baltimore to San Jacinto, the battleground where Texas had originally won its independence from Mexico and became a Republic.
- On April 21st, she was handed over from the US Federal Government to the Government of the State of Texas to serve as a permanent memorial. This date is important as it's the same date as the battle just mentioned.
- The Battleship Texas
was the first permanent battleship memorial museum in the US.
When the battleship was presented to the State of Texas, she was commissioned as the flagship of the Texas Navy, as a gesture.
- She is today listed as a US National Historic Landmark.

Sadly, Nicholas and I were not able to tour onboard due to her undergoing repairs while we were in Texas. However, we did get to admire her beauty from the shore and the grounds of the San Jacinto Monument. c:

I love the USS Texas. I got to tour her in 2009 and you can feel the amount of respect she commanded while walking through the historic corridors. She was as tough as her name sake and never did she flee a battle. Here's to you USS Texas, You earned retirement.
